Tasgheer Gallery--Past Exhibitions

Picture
Our second solo exhibition features the work of Emirati artist Khulood Hassan Al J.  The exhibition is titled "Qalaq Waswas", and runs from July 23 - August 30, 2014.  Below find a sample of some of the works displayed, as well as a statement from the artist herself about the show.

“Qalaq Waswas is a collection of illustrations that represent the random thoughts that may occur on daily basis.  Thoughts unfortunately cannot be materialized since it is within the mind.  Therefore, it is harmless, or that is what seems to be logical to society…the logic they thought up using the mind.

Many don’t believe in mental illnesses because the effects cannot be seen, or mainly they believe it to be when someone runs outside completely naked saying, “I am a cat on a quest”, a stereotype they thought up using the mind.

Anxiety is an emotion that you feel when you are too overwhelmed, and feel you have no control over a certain event.  Anxiety cannot be materialized, therefore it can’t be that harmful, and can be controlled with the will of the host.  It is unnecessary, you thought within your mind.  You can’t let go of the hard feelings you have towards someone in your mind, yet you easily ask someone with anxiety to let go of their negative thoughts because it is more convenient for you.

You can never let go of the sadness of remembering the loss of a loved one, but easily tell someone with anxiety that their feelings are not valid because these thoughts don’t exist, and just reply, “you’re worrying too much” or “it’s just in your head”.  That comeback that you wish you could’ve said at that time, I thought of 5 comebacks and alternative ways I could’ve dealt with that event, and what are the worst case scenarios that could go wrong when I try these alternative routes.

Be kind with your words, don’t make me feel worse than I already do, think about the weight of your words, in your mind.”
