This solo show features sixteen new digitized black and white photographs from Austrian artist Gerlinde Miesenbock, created over the last two years. "Botanica" is a media-archeological project about domesticated nature and its relationship to people, referring to historic use of photography for staging plants and landscapes. In much of my work I have been concerned with human relationship to spaces in regards to questions of identity, heritage and family. Over time I have realized the importance of plants in people’s homes. This particular approach is inspired by the 1920's botanist George Arends, who as an amateur photographed the detailed blossoms of his creations. The white fabric is held by the owner or gardener of the specific plant (flowers, trees, shrubs). That way s/he remains visible, but anonymous. Thus, nature is isolated from its usual surroundings, but set in context with people as active creators of nature as living space and projection screen for their desires. It emphasizes the role of the human as actively creating nature as and in a habitat. The portrait of the potted plant is to be read as an extended portrait of the person behind the sheet. Through the collaboration a link to social aspects of domestic photography is equally drawn. The project is an occasion for visits and conversations. www.gerlinde-miesenboeck.com |
